How to Install a DVD-ROM in Windows XP
Installing a DVD-ROM drive provides you with a drive that reads the DVD media devices. DVD discs contain more information than a CD, so some software companies have moved toward distributing on a DVD instead of a CD. You can install a new DVD-ROM drive in your computer, adding an additional drive to the configurations. The drive is packaged with the cable and jumper pins necessary for the new installation.

1
Remove the computer case's screws using a screwdriver. The screws are usually in the back of the computer. After the screws are removed, the case's top slides off and the inner part of the computer is exposed. This allows you to view the cables and current hardware installed in your machine.

2
Attach the cable to the rear side of the DVD drive. Connect the other end of the cable to your motherboard. The drive connections are labeled on the motherboard. You can also trace the drive's cable connection by viewing hard drive cable connections attached to the motherboard. These attachments are grouped together on the motherboard.

Slide the DVD into one of the available bays in the front of the computer case near the top. Screw the drive into the bay using the screws included with the DVD device.

4
Connect one of the power supply cables to the back end of the DVD drive. This cable connection is located next to the drive's motherboard cable.
-
5
Replace the shell of the computer case. Turn on the machine. Your computer should automatically detect the new drive.
