How Do I Get a License to Open a Business?
Obtaining the correct business license is vital to business start-up and customer acquisition. Without the business license a business owner runs the risk of having their trade shut down before it becomes profitable. Obtaining a license to open a business starts at the required city, county and/or state governmental levels. However, in some special cases a federally mandated license or permit may stand between the business start-up and the business owner.

Determine the business license that applies to your field by calling the city, county, state and federal agencies. Gather detailed information about your business such as its address, Doing Business As name, description and Employment Identification Number (EIN).

Ask for the location and phone number of the governmental entity that distributes the applications for the licensing. Obtain all permits and/or licensing applications by requesting them via mail or visiting the governmental agency in person. Obtain a checklist of a complete application. Check your business application to be sure all the paperwork is complete. Ask a worker to confirm that the blank application is complete if a checklist is unavailable.

Request written instructions to help fill out the business license application. Ask for an instructional website if written instructions are not available. Fill out the application according to any available instructions.

Check your applications for any errors in addresses or missing data. Sign and date the application. Obtain a copy of the fully completed business license or permit application. Insert the correct fee for the business license application into the envelope. Send the application to the address on the pre-printed envelope via certified mail to obtaining proof of mailing.

Wait the designated time, then call to determine if the governmental agency has received your application. Make corrections within the application if returned back to your business office. Call the city, state, county or federal office if your have not received a notice or license after the designated processing time has passed.

Figure out if your business fits within the proper zone. If not, obtain the proper zoning permit from the appropriate governmental agency. Obtain a seller's permit when required for your type of business as determined by city, state and county levels.
Never begin your business without the proper license or permit required on all levels of government. Doing so could mean jail time, penalty fees or the shutting down of your business.
