How to Use a Penn Reel
Penn reels are recognized among anglers for their quality and dependability. They perform consistently and allow for maximum advantage over a fish. Each reel is designed for a specific purpose, such as surf casting or deep sea fishing. In fact, Penn has reels for every type of fish from trout to marlin. Using their reels is relatively easy and just like using any other reel, with a few exceptions. Take care of these reels, and they will take care of you.

1
Rest your thumb on the line spool behind the front of the reel. Release the bail lock mechanism on the side of the Penn reel by flipping it forward with your thumb.
-
2
Hold your fishing rod over the side of the bridge or boat and gently release pressure on your finger holding the line spool. Allow the line to slowly and evenly wind off the spool and drop. Be conscious of the amount of weight on the end of your line. The more weight you have, the faster the line will pull off the reel.

3
Click the bail lock lever back with your finger once the line is at the desired depth. Make sure the lever locks into place. You will hear it locking into place and the spool will stop spinning.
-
4
Crank the handle of the Penn reel forward to bring the line back up. If you have a fish on, turn the drag knob forward or backward to increase or decrease pressure on the drag system. This allows you to play the fish with your reel, tiring it out before the fish is brought on board.
-
5
Unhook the sinker, bait rig or whatever equipment you are using from your line when finished fishing for the day. Clean the saltwater from the reel and wipe it clean with a cotton cloth. Apply oil to the oil inlet on the side of the Penn reel by inserting the oil tube nozzle into the hole and squeezing. Store the rod and reel in a rack out of the sunlight until your next use.
