Homemade GPS Mount

Homemade GPS Mount thumbnail
Mount your GPS to your car with some PVC pipe.

GPS systems are a big help when it comes to getting lost travelers to their destination. In order for a GPS system to be effective, however, it needs to be mounted in a place where it can be easily seen. If you purchased your GPS system from an after market dealer, you may not have received a car mount with it. However, with just a few pieces of pipe, you can create your own mount for the system.

Things You'll Need

  • Ruler
  • Two rolls of small adhesive foam tape with a 1/2-inch wide center
  • 1/2-inch PVC "T" joint
  • 1/2-inch PVC "L" joint
  • 1/2-inch PVC pipe
  • PVC saw
  • Heavy duty plastic coated wire

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a small opening in your dashboard. These nooks are usually in places between two of the dash components or in an opening to keep papers and change. Measure the size of this opening with the ruler.

    • 2

Unwind the adhesive foam tape so that the spools snugly fit vertically in the space you found in the dash. They should fit in there so they do not move around.

    • 3

Place the two spools of tape on opposite ends of the "T" joint. This is the base of the mount. Place the base into the dash opening with the last part of the "T" facing out toward the interior of the car.

    • 4

Attach the "L" bracket to the exposed part of the "T" bracket. The "L" bracket should be pointing up.

    • 5

Place the piece of PVC pipe in the top of the "L" bracket so it is sticking up. You may have to cut the PVC pipe with the pipe cutter to get it to a height which is comfortable for you to look at.

    • 6

Wrap your GPS with the wire so that the wire creates a cradle. You want to make sure the you have access to the controls, the sides are securely fastened to the wire, and the screen is visible. As you wrap, you should have two ends of the wire pointing down.

    • 7

Attach the wire to the PVC pipe by wrapping it around the pipe and tying the ends together. The GPS should sit on top of the pipe.

Tips & Warnings

  • Get the strongest wire you can for this project. The stronger the wire, the sturdier it will be to keep the GPS system in place.

  • Make sure the mount is securely wedged into the open space of the vehicle. You don't want the GPS to come flying off if you have to make a quick stop.
