How to Attach Hoses From a Pump to the Pool
One of the most frustrating things for a new pool owner to learn is how to connect the pump to the pool. If you hired a professional pool service to set up the pump connection, the pool will be up and running in no time. Unfortunately, unless you learn how to connect the hoses from the pump to the pool, you'll have to call the professionals again the following year when you open your pool for the summer. It's best to take the time early on to learn how to assemble and set up your pool filter and attach it to your pool. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Locate the filter out spout. This is the part of the filter where the clean filtered water is returned to the pool. Make this the first connection between the filter pump and the pool.
-
2
Attach the pool hose to the filter out spout. There are two types of hoses, the screw-on and the clamp type. If you are using screw-on hoses, apply plumber's tape to the male end of the hose before securing the connection. If you are using the clamp type of connection, dip the open end of the hose in hot water for 5 or 10 seconds to make it pliable, then push the hose over the out spout and tighten the clamp.

3
Connect the other end of the hose to the pool return. Using the same technique as you did when connecting the hose to the filter out spout; attach the hose to the pool return.
-
4
Identify the pool pump inlet. This is the part of the filter assembly where the pool water enters the pump for filtration.
-
5
Affix one end of the hose to the pool pump inlet. If your pool has a main drain, you'll need a main drain/skimmer diverter. This allows you to connect hoses from both the skimmer and the main drain. It also allows you to choose which of the two sources (or a combination of both) to allow water to travel.
-
6
Attach the other end of the hose to the skimmer opening. Similarly, if there is a main drain, connect the other open ended hose to the main drain port.
-
7
Run the filter and check the connections for leaks.
