How to Play a DVD with a Decoder
When trying to play a DVD on a new drive for the first time, you may receive a Windows error stating that a decoder is not installed. A DVD decoder takes the data on a disk and translates it into information that the computer can use to display visual images. Without a decoder, the computer will recognize the disk, but have no way to play the movie. Many DVD drives come with a decoder installed, but some may need additional software.

1
Insert a DVD into your disk drive. A pop-up window will ask you which action you would like Windows to perform. Select "Play DVD Video" and click "OK".

If your DVD begins to play automatically, then you have a pre-installed DVD decoder. You will not need to take any further steps.
If you get an error message, you will need to install a DVD decoder. Users who have purchased a PC with a DVD drive included will need to check with their computer manufacturer regarding which software to install. Many manufacturers will offer free DVD decoding software. If the DVD drive was purchased as a replacement for an older drive or as a component for a custom PC, you may need to purchase decoder software. Check with the drive manufacturer to find out what programs they recommend.

Download the DVD decoder installation file of your choosing. Save the file to your desktop. Double click the file to install. This process should only take a few minutes. You may be prompted for additional information on screen. Once the installation is complete, the decoder will run concurrently with Windows Media Player. Your DVDs should play automatically from now on.
