How to Pack a UHaul

Moving to another dwelling is often exciting, but the actual process is far less appealing to many. However, the thought of packing, then loading a U-Haul, need not be a source of dread. With careful planning and organization, you can maximize every inch of space in both boxes and truck. If you do it right, you will protect every possession, no matter how delicate, and enjoy a smooth, uneventful transition.

Instructions

    • 1

Pack your boxes tightly. When you get to your new residence, the last thing you want to discover are broken dinner plates. Wrap with newspaper, bubble wrap or packing peanuts. You can even use dishtowels or clothing, if you want to save money. Once everything is in the boxes, ensure little room exists for movement. When you're finished, close the box tightly with packing tape. It will be helpful to label your boxes according to room. Also, make sure not to pack the box too heavy.

    • 2

Wrap your furniture. Couches, dressers and kitchen hutches will inevitably have to pass through your doorway. To avoid nicks or scratches, go around them several times with plastic stretch wrap. You can buy a roll at any U-Haul location or moving store.

    • 3

Load the heavy, bulky items first. This includes appliances, bedroom furniture and sofas. Not only will you get them out of the way, but if you have limited room in the end, these items should require no repositioning. Also, put smaller boxes into your furniture or appliances. For example, putting a box in your microwave can save room.

    • 4

Stack the rest of the items according to size and destination room. If possible, keep your bathroom, bedroom and living room boxes together to minimize confusion when unpacking. Place the larger boxes on the bottom. If you have a sofa or mattress, you can stack things on top to add more natural cushion.
