Having clogged ears can be more than irritating. It can be difficult to hear and can be quite uncomfortable. Ears get clogged for a number of different reasons including colds, swimming or earwax buildup. No matter what the reason, it's unpleasant at best and often over-the-counter medications won't alleviate symptoms. There are several proven home remedies that can unclog ears.

Tilt your head to the side and pour a capful of hydrogen peroxide into the ear. Allow it to sit for at five minutes. It's easiest to lie down with the ear facing up. There will be fizzing and crackling as the peroxide destroys the wax. Hold the ear over the sink and use a clean dry cloth to clean up the ear after five minutes has elapsed. Repeat on the other side. This method is great for clogs due to ear wax.

Hold your nose with your fingers and blow gently. This will cause your ears to pop. This method is quick and helpful after flying.

Put a few drops of coconut oil in each ear before going to bed. Ears should be unclogged by morning. This is helpful no matter why the ears are clogged.

Sit in the bathroom while a hot shower is running or stand in the shower. The steam will help to clear up the congestion and unclog the ears.

Allow the water from a warm or hot shower to go directly into the ear. Empty it by tilting your head and repeating until the clogging is alleviated.

Tip

  • Talk to a doctor if the clogging persists. An ear-nose-and-throat doctor will be able to unclog it if nothing else works.

Tip

  • If the clog is due to ear wax, Q-Tips might push the wax further into the ear and should be avoided. Only use holding your breath and plugging your nose after occasions such as flying. Blowing too hard may cause a tear in the eardrum so be careful.
