"Phone Off Hook" Error Message Does Not Disappear
-
1
Unplug the phone cord from the printer and examine the connecting pieces on both ends. If you see four conductor metal pieces in the cord, replace it with a cord that only has two.
-
2
Plug the phone cord back into the printer and the phone jack. Wait up to five minutes to see if the error message reappears.
-
-
3
Remove the power cable from the back of the printer and wait 15 seconds, then plug the cable back in. Unplug the phone cord from the back of the printer and plug it into a phone.
-
4
Listen through the phone's receiver for a dial tone. Replace the phone cord with a new one if you hear no dial tone.
-
5
Disconnect all of the other phones on the same line as the printer, doing so one by one. Replace a phone if the message disappears after you unplug it from the phone cord.
-
6
Take the printer to a repair shop if the error message still does not disappear since this may indicate the line interface unit is faulty and needs to be replaced.

7
Reset the printer and see if the problem continues. Turn the printer on and pull the power cord out from the back of the printer.
-
8
Unplug the USB cable from the printer and then the computer, then plug it into the computer and then the printer. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet, then plug it back into the outlet and the printer and press the "Power" button.

9
Turn the printer off if the problem continues and unplug the power cord from the back. Open the top cover to expose the scanning glass.
-
10
Spray glass cleaner on a microfiber cloth and use it to clean the glass and the inside of the lid. Use a dry microfiber cloth to dry the glass and the underside of the lid, then close the lid.
-
11
Pull up on the ADF cover to open it. Use a microfiber cloth dampened with distilled water to clean off the feed rollers and separator pad. Wipe down the glass strip inside the ADF, then dry it off completely with a dry microfiber cloth. Close the ADF cover and plug the power cord back in, then place a blank piece of paper in the ADF and make a copy of it. If there are vertical lines in the copy, take the printer to a repair shop.
