How to Update an Apple Mobile Service Device on Windows XP

Apple and Microsoft represent competing computer operation formats, but Apple mobile devices, such as the iPhone, are fully compatible with Windows operating systems. Updates for Apple mobile devices are conducted via Apple iTunes. If you do not have iTunes installed on your XP computer, you must download and install it from the Apple iTunes download page (see Resources) before initiating the update process for your Apple mobile device.

Instructions

1. Connect your Apple wireless device to your computer with a USB cable and wait as the computer recognizes the device and opens iTunes. To open iTunes manually, click "Start," "All Programs," then "iTunes."

2. Click on the iPhone icon in the left menu bar of your iTunes page.

3. Click "Update."

4. Click "Upgrade Now" if there are updates available.

5. Read and agree to the Apple License Terms and wait as the update downloads and installs. The process varies depending on the size of the update and your connection speed, so expect to wait anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. Your Apple mobile device will restart to complete the upgrade process on Windows XP.
