There are dozens of mainstream versions of the Linux operating system, most available for free. Linux gives you access to many free applications, and support information is available in online user forums and websites. Linux can be installed on a number of external devices and put onto most computers. If you have an SD (secure digital) card, you can install a version of Linux onto it and run it from there or install it on your computer.

Instructions

      Download UNetbootin (see Resources).

      Launch UNetbootin and insert your SD card into the computer.

      Click the drop-down menu next to "Distributions" and choose the version you want on your card. Click "Type" and select your SD card.

      Click "OK" to download and install the distribution you chose onto your SD card.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many distributions are up to 700MB and can take over an hour to download if you have a slow Internet connection.
