How to Make a File Password Protected in XP thumbnail
Keeping your private data protected is important for computer use.

Computers are convenient tools for storing data and information, but sometimes you may want your data to be private. Windows XP provides a way to make your files password-protected. Whenever someone tries to open a password-protected file, Windows XP will prompt them to type in the correct password. If you use password protection, your private information will be available only to you.

Instructions

    • 1

Right-click the file you want to password protect.

    • 2

Click on "Properties" when the small menu appears.

    • 3

Click on the "Sharing" tab in the Properties window.

    • 4

Check the box that says "Make this folder private."

    • 5

Click "Yes" if a box appears asking you if you want to create a password. This will happen if you do not already have a password set on your computer.

    • 6

Type your new password into the box and then click "Create Password."

    • 7

Close the password window and then click "OK" in the Properties window.
