Instructions

    • 1

Choose a container for the card holder. Several options to consider are coffee cans, shoe boxes, tissue boxes, and a square or rectangular plastic container. Whichever option you choose for the container, it needs to be large enough to hold the valentines and it must have a lid.

    • 2

Apply a decorative covering on the outside of the container; cover the lid separate from the base. Two options to consider are wrapping paper or fabric that has a heart, rose or other red, white and pink pattern. You can also cut words from magazines that coincide with the holiday, like the words "love," "heart," "cupid" or "romance". Apply the covering by using a foam brush and craft glue.

    • 3

Create a mail slot for the letters. It should measure approximately one inch by six inches to fit the valentines. Only adults should do this part of the project. Using a pencil, trace the space onto the lid, then use a box cutter to cut it out. If using a container that has a plastic lid, use a piece of sandpaper to sand down the cut edges. For a tissue box, use the slot already in place.

    • 4

Add embellishments onto the container. They can include decorations such as pink, white and red curly ribbons, stickers, confetti, construction paper hearts, conversation candy hearts and self-stick crystals. Use a foam brush and craft glue to apply the embellishments.

    • 5

Apply a clear craft sealant onto the container to prevent the embellishments from falling off. Only do this step if you used any covering other than fabric. For decorations that are 3D, such as glitter or curly ribbons, use a spray craft adhesive all over the container. For all others, use a foam brush to apply a thin layer of sealant over the entire outside of the container.

Tips & Warnings

  • When applying the spray adhesive or craft sealant, avoid touching the outside of the container. Doing so can leave fingerprints, which can show on the finished project. To hold the container steady during crafting, put your hand inside and press on the bottom.
