Use an ethernet cable to integrate your DirecTV DVR into your ethernet network.

Some cable and satellite providers require an ethernet cable be attached to your DVR unit in order to take advantage of certain interactive features like pay-per-view purchases and video-on-demand. If you have DirecTV service and wish to connect your DVR to an ethernet network, you can do so in just a few basic steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect one end of your ethernet cable into one of the numbered ports on the back of the ethernet router, switch, or other ethernet networking device. Apply gentle pressure until you hear the ethernet connector make a soft clicking sound.

    • 2

Connect the other end of the ethernet cable to the ethernet port on the DirecTv DVR, again pushing the cable in softly until the connector clicks and you cannot push it in any further.

    • 3

Reset the router or other home networking device by unplugging its power cord for a full 30 seconds and plugging it back in. This is an essential step as devices that use ethernet cables will not recognize a new connection until they have been reset.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clearly, you will need to have your ethernet networking device close enough to your DVR that an ethernet cable will stretch between the two. If it is not, you can either relocate the networking device or purchase a longer ethernet cable. Your DVR may be able to connect wirelessly to a network, but this depends heavily on what type of DirecTV service you use as well as what model of DVR they provided you. Contact DirecTV technical support to address any questions of this nature.
