Register a Salvage Motorcycle

Registering a salvaged vehicle carries various requirements that are state-specific. There are no national standards; however, the process is similar from state to state. The specific state and locality requirements for registration of an unclaimed or salvage vehicle are maintained at your community's registrar office, Department of Motor Vehicles, licensing office or revenue office.

Instructions

  1. Obtain the Title and Register the Vehicle

    • 1

Identify the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the motorcycle. This is stamped onto the frame of the vehicle and can often be found on a sticker or strip of metal under the seat. The exact location will vary by type of motorcycle, and some custom-built motorcycles may not have a VIN.

    • 2

Perform a VIN search through your local police department. Most states require a VIN search to identify the history of the vehicle. Some states require that you file for a lost or abandoned title. This is typically done through the registrar's office. Older vehicles do not have a full modern VIN and typically can be licensed without too much research.

    • 3

Contact your local registrar's office for licensing requirements.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most salvage yards will not purchase or sell a vehicle without some form of title for legal reasons. If you obtain a salvaged motorcycle from a salvage yard without a title, you will need to do a VIN search on it through your local police department to ensure it is not a stolen vehicle.
