Determine what method of learning best meets your needs. There are several methods you can undertake to learn Kung Fu and martial arts, including online videos, instructional tapes and DVDs as well as in-person classes. Online videos are available from content creation sites free of charge, although these videos are often quite short, focusing on the mechanics of one simple movement. Instructors in these videos may not always be professionals. Instructional DVDs or videos can be purchased from most health and fitness stores, or online. They are often 30 minutes or longer, focusing on a cohesive flow of movements that are guided by a professional. In-person classes expose students to teachers trained in Kung Fu and/or other martial arts. Teachers show students various movements and correct students personally when mistakes are made or improvement is necessary. Most large towns and cities offer martial arts classes at specialized studios or as part of gym programs.

Practice regularly and independently of any method of instruction you choose. The phenomenon of motor learning, also known as muscle memory, strengthens your body's ability to remember a specific physical movement through repetition. The repetitive pattern of a movement tones the muscles being used, and the movement becomes much easier. Therefore, regular practice makes martial arts and Kung Fu movements easier to recall, both through muscle and mind.
