Instructions for Making Hair Bows

Hair bows dress up a child's outfit.

Hair accessories can be very expensive in retail stores. Make them yourself to save money. Create artistic shapes and bows. A hair bow can be a literal bow on a hair clip that beautifies your hair. It can also mean anything on a clip that decorates and holds your hair. Share some quality time with your children and teens, making hair bows as crafts. Bring out your creativity and put it on a hair clip.

Things You'll Need

• 1 1/2-inch satin ribbon
• Scissors
• Needle and thread
• Alligator hair clips
• Plastic hair clips

Instructions

1. Cut two 15-inch pieces of 1 1/2-inch satin ribbon. Tie a regular 4-inch bow with the ribbon, just like tying your shoe. Tie a second bow with the other ribbon.

2. Cut a 5-inch piece of satin ribbon. Make two folds long ways to make the ribbon 1/2-inch wide. Tie a knot in the middle of the 5-inch ribbon. Put the two bows from step one together and lay the knot on the center of the top bow. Bring the ends of the ribbon behind the bows and tie them together with this shorter ribbon. Make a tight knot. Your two bows are now one. Trim the ribbons to have 2-inch tails with inward "V" cuts.

3. Sew this bow onto the top of a plastic or alligator hair clip. Make several loops from the back of the bow around the top of the clip to secure them. Make a knot to lock the stitches.

Tips & Warnings

• Use 1-inch or 2-inch lace strips to make lacy bows for the clips.

• If you don't want to sew, use store-bought curly ribbon and glue for hair bows.

• Glue die-cut shapes together to make your own creation and glue to the top of a hair clip.

• You can get a pack of these small foam shapes at a craft store.
