How to Make Easy Crawfish Traps
Crawfish, also called crayfish, are little crustaceans. But unlike lobsters, crawfish live in fresh water. This makes them a popular catch for fishermen who spend their time at any freshwater body. The crawfish swim in large schools. You can make an easy crawfish trap to set in the water. The traps work best with fatty bait.
Things You'll Need
- 2 large plastic bottles of the same size
- Sharp knife
- Hole punch
- Bait
- Reusable zip ties
Instructions

1
Cut the top off of a large plastic bottle with a sharp knife. This is the funnel.
-
2
Slice the bottom off of another bottle. Try to make the cut as low down on the bottle as possible. You just need to cut off the "feet" of the bottle until the straight sides start.
-
-
3
Slip the funnel up inside the other bottle--this is the top portion of the other bottle with its bottom cut off. The cap of the funnel should be pointing up inside the other bottle.
-
4
Use a hole punch to make holes through both layers of bottles around the bottom edge. Make a ring around the base of the bottles, with the holes spaced about 6 inches apart.
-
5
Separate the funnel from the other bottle and take the cap off the funnel. Place the bait inside the larger bottle away from the opening.
-
6
Place the uncapped funnel into the other bottle and line up the holes on both pieces.
-
7
Put a reusable zip tie through each hole and tighten them so the funnel can’t fall out of the bottom bottle.
-
8
Place the trap into the water and leave it for several hours or overnight before retrieving and resetting it.

Tips & Warnings
Place a few rocks on top of the trap so other people can’t see it and to make it look more natural to the crawfish.
Check with your local officials about acceptable places to place your trap or you could be fined.
