Find low-income housing programs in Ohio. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Section 8 are run by the federal government to provide financial assistance for low-income housing. One of the places you can find low-income housing in Ohio is on the U.S. Department of Housing and Development website and the Ohio Housing Locator website (see Resources).

Only U.S. citizens qualify for low-income housing in Ohio. Find out whether you are eligible for low-income housing in Ohio. One main requirement is that you must be a U.S. citizen. You should also have a good record with previous landlords. You should have applied for affordable housing based on your income. This means that not more than 30 percent of your income should go toward rent. The elderly, disabled, homeless and single families stand a good chance of benefiting from these programs.

Find applications. Go to your local housing authority and find out if they are accepting applications for low-income housing (See Resource 4 for a list of housing authorities in Ohio). You can also search for these applications online. Section 8 provides research services to find government and private rental assistance programs at a fee of $12. You can find different programs that cater to different areas in Ohio, such as Cleveland and Cincinnati.
