How to Make an Oven Smoker
Foods that are made in a smoker take on a very distinct and rich flavor. Purchasing a commercial smoker can be expensive, especially when you consider that you likely wouldn't be using it everyday. Fortunately, it's not difficult to make your own inexpensive smoker. You can make a smoker from several different items, including an electric oven. Does this Spark an idea?

Obtain an old electric oven. It isn't necessary for it to function, or have knobs or burners. It only needs the standard oven racks inside.

Remove the coil burners and covers from the top of the oven if they are still there. They should come out very easily.

Drill a hole in the middle of the drawer at the bottom of the oven. The hole must be large enough to pass an extension cord through.

Cut a hole in the floor of the oven compartment. It should be 7 inches in diameter. Use a small jigsaw with a blade that is designed for cutting metal. When you are finished, the oven compartment and bottom drawer should be linked.

Insert a piece of metal duct into the hole. It must be 7 inches in diameter and fit snugly in the opening. The duct should be approximately 1 to 2 feet long.

Place your oven an a solid, dry surface so it will be stable. Place a standard hot plate into the drawer underneath the metal chimney you created.

Pull the extension cord from the hotplate through the hole in front of the drawer. Place a cast iron pan filled with your favorite wood chips on the hot plate. Plug in the hot plate and wait for smoke to fill the oven.
