Attending an online university and working as a nurse will be a challenge worth your effort.

Online universities provide the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with the opportunity to continue working while pursuing an Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science or Bachelor of Science in Nursing. This route to obtaining the status of Registered Nurse (RN) is a sensible way to work in the nursing field while continuing your education.

Establish your career as an LPN (policies about time on the job vary from school to school). Online universities cannot provide you with clinical hours; therefore your time on the job fulfills this portion of the educational requirements.

Decide which level of education you want to pursue. Few online schools offer a direct route to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from a Practical Nursing License. Most require you earn an Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science degree before continuing on to the Bachelor's program. This can also be accomplished online, usually from the same school.

Check the computer system requirements for the school(s) you are considering. Some online colleges conduct class discussions through chat rooms or instant messengers that you must download. Others have streaming video lectures and presentations in Windows Media Player format, MS Silverlight, Flash Player, or are available for download through iTunes. Most require Microsoft Office and Adobe Reader.

Enroll, complete degree requirements, graduate and take the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses). This process usually takes about two to three years.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your employer may offer a tuition program. Let Human Resources know you are going back to school before you start. This could save you money on books as well as tuition.

  • Always check a school's accreditation. Visit "Get Educated" (see references) to learn how to do this.
