How to Go From an LPN to an RN Online
Online universities provide the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with the opportunity to continue working while pursuing an Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science or Bachelor of Science in Nursing. This route to obtaining the status of Registered Nurse (RN) is a sensible way to work in the nursing field while continuing your education.

You will need to work at least part time as an LPN while you complete your degree. Establish your career as an LPN (policies about time on the job vary from school to school). Online universities cannot provide you with clinical hours; therefore your time on the job fulfills this portion of the educational requirements.

Either an associate's or bachelor's degree will lead to an RN. Decide which level of education you want to pursue. Few online schools offer a direct route to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from a Practical Nursing License. Most require you earn an Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science degree before continuing on to the Bachelor's program. This can also be accomplished online, usually from the same school.

An internet search can provide you with a list of programs that suit your needs. Find an accredited online school that offers an LPN to RN program. There are a number of websites that offer degree comparisons. "Get Educated" (see references) is one place to start, as it lists only accredited online schools.

If you have an older computer, you may want to invest in a new laptop to meet the minimum requirements of your school. Check the computer system requirements for the school(s) you are considering. Some online colleges conduct class discussions through chat rooms or instant messengers that you must download. Others have streaming video lectures and presentations in Windows Media Player format, MS Silverlight, Flash Player, or are available for download through iTunes. Most require Microsoft Office and Adobe Reader.

Time spent will depend upon the degree you choose. Enroll, complete degree requirements, graduate and take the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses). This process usually takes about two to three years.
