MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, more commonly known as MP3, is a type of digital audio encoding format. This technology allows for music to be compressed with minimal loss of sound quality. The MP3 player has had a dramatic impact on the way the world listens to music. It's portable, durable and can hold a music lover's entire collection.

Large Amount of Data Storage

An MP3 player offers much more storage space than a CD. Some large albums may not even fit on one CD, while an MP3 player can hold hundreds of albums. It's also very easy to delete albums and tracks that you don't want, freeing up more space. Songs on a CD can't be erased, unless they're on a CD-RW, but the sound quality is often sacrificed when you record and erase multiple times on a CD-RW.

Easier to Transport

MP3 players are much more compact than CD players. In addition, they are good for people who like to listen to music while they exercise, as MP3 players don't need to be on a stable surface. MP3 players have no skipping or jumping on playback.

Durability

An MP3 player can withstand a beating much easier than a CD. Someone using an MP3 player doesn't have to worry about CDs scratching or breaking, making MP3 players a much better choice when it comes to durability.

Easier File Transfer

Burning a CD takes quite a while, especially if the CD has a lot of tracks. When you transfer songs to an MP3 player, it takes only a fraction of the time it takes to burn a CD. All you have to do is plug the MP3 player into your computer and copy the music over. Depending on the number of files you're transferring, this usually takes just a few minutes at the most.

Easier to Use

With an MP3 player, you have your entire music collection at your fingertips. You don't need to worry about looking through hundreds of CDs to find a specific one. Many MP3 players alphabetize your albums and allow you to customize the way you view your tracks.

Economical and Environmentally Friendly

If you are burning a substantial amount of CDs, an MP3 player is usually more economical in the long run. While it may seem like a large investment in the beginning, you won't have to continually purchase CDs. An MP3 player also cuts down on waste, because you're not throwing away old and broken CDs.
