How to Establish a Book Publishing Company
Starting a publishing business is not an easy task. There are already many established publishing businesses that will compete with you for readers. However, you may succeed in the business if you are willing to put in the time and effort to get training and do the research about markets that will sell the books that you publish. A publishing venture requires dedication, but also the necessary education, financial backing, industry contacts and legal requirements to make the business a success.

Starting the Company
-
1
Get a relevant university degree. Good choices are English, communication, and journalism. This education will give you the skills for being a publisher. Degrees in humanities like art and history are also useful to give you the credentials if you choose to go into academic publishing.
-
2
Gain experience in the publishing industry before you pursue your own venture. Work as an editor, an agent or in similar capacities to learn the aspects of the business and to make contacts that will be useful.
-
-
3
Research book markets. Do not go into markets that do not fit into your area of expertise or that are over-saturated. If you chose to go into an area that is over-saturated, create an exceptional product that will be more noticeable than those of the competitors. Define the mission and scope of your publishing venture. For example, select the age or genres of your market.
-
4
Be assured of your finances. Consult with an accountant or a business financial planner to see if you have enough money to start and run the publishing company. Don't quit your day job because you must have a livelihood while pursuing your ideal.
-
5
Consult a lawyer about incorporating your business. Incorporating your business can help protect your personal assets by separating your personal finances from business finances. Do not put your own assets at risk from creditors and other liabilities through failure to incorporate the business. You will need to establish a business address for incorporation.

Attend writer conferences to find new authors. Target the conferences that fit in with your genre.
