Learn how to tell the difference between a sonar reading of what is below you and what is to the side or toward the shore. Humminbird fish finders show you where the fish are in every direction. The side view is on the left side of the screen in a narrow box that takes up about a quarter of the screen. The below view is on the remainder of the screen.

2
Learn the fish finder's symbol for a fish so you will recognize a fish when you see it. When a fish swims under the boat, or next to the boat, there will be a small squiggly line on your screen. This shows that a fish is present. Identifying a good fishing hole with your fish finder involves monitoring where the most fish appear to be.

Decipher what the numbers on the display mean. The first number is how deep the water is below the boat. This number have the designation "ft" beside it. The next number is the water temperature. This number will have a temperature mark next to it. Humminbird sonar fish finders also will tell you what direction your boat is traveling.
