How to Clean Rear Projection Lamps

How to Clean Rear Projection Lamps thumbnail
Rear projection lamps in televisions need occasional cleaning to maintain picture clarity.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) televisions have a rear projection lamp that shines through a green, red and blue panel to produce the picture on the screen. Placing the television in a warm house or an area with dust behind the appliance will draw in the dust from the atmosphere though the cooling fan. This places a layer of fine dust on the projection lamp that makes the picture on the screen blurry. Cleaning the lamp will brighten and clarify the picture on the screen.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the television, unplug the television from the electrical wall outlet and let it cool for one hour.

    • 2

Unscrew the lamp-housing door using a Phillips screwdriver. Different models of rear projection televisions have a lamp-housing door, on either the left or right, in the rear of the television. Turn the screw counterclockwise to loosen and remove the screw. Set the screw aside.

    • 3

Remove the two Phillips screws in the lamp housing in the same manner and set them aside. The lamp housing surrounds the rear projection lamp. The lamp resembles a large outdoor light bulb.

    • 4

Grasp the lamp housing on the top and bottom with one hand and slide it out of the television case. The lamp housing will glide out on the two rails on each side underneath the housing.

    • 5

Spray three squirts of camera lens cleaner on the lamp.

    • 6

Wipe the cleaner on the lamp in circular motions to clean off any dust or debris. Continue wiping with a clean and dry cloth until the lamp is dry.

    • 7

Place the lamp housing in the television and line up the sides on the two rails. Slide the lamp housing into the television until the front of the housing meets the screw holes in the frame.

    • 8

Place the two Phillips screws in the holes and tighten them clockwise.

    • 9

Slide the lamp-housing door back in place while aligning the screw hole. Screw in the Phillips screw in a clockwise direction.

    • 10

Plug the television into the electrical wall socket.

Tips & Warnings

  • Rear projection lamps require cleaning to maintain a crisp clear picture on the screen.

  • Electrical current is present in a television when it is off. Unplugging the television from the wall prevents any accidental shock hazards.

  • Projections lamps become very hot when the television is on. Let the television cool completely before attempting to clean the lamp.

  • Use only a camera lens cleaning spray to clean projection lamps. This type of spray leaves no haze or residue behind so the picture will be clear.
