Closed captioning is the textual display of audio on televisions. In July 1993, the United States Federal Communications Commission began requiring that all televisions with a screen size of 13 inches or larger contain a built-in decoder to display closed captions. In 1996, the federal government began requiring all television programs to be closed captioned. On televisions, closed captioning can be turned on and off.

Aim your remote control at your television.

Press the menu button on your remote control. A menu with several options will pop up on your television screen.
Step 3
Scroll through the menu and find the "closed caption" option. The option might be labeled "Closed Caption" or "CC." There are four closed captioning modes. Once you open the closed caption sub-menu from the main menu, the screen will inform you which closed captioning mode is currently being displayed.
Step 4
Disable closed captioning. From the closed caption sub-menu, find the option labeled "CC Off," "Disable Closed Captioning" or any variation of these titles. Once you select this option, you can exit the menu, and closed captioning will be turned off.
Turning Closed Captioning Off Without a Remote Control
Step 1
Find the "menu" button on the surface of your television. On tube televisions, the button is usually located on the front of the television. On flat-panel televisions, the button is usually located on the side or bottom of the screen.
Step 2
Scroll through the main menu using the channel or volume up-and-down buttons located near the menu button. Select the "closed caption" option to open the closed caption sub-menu.
Step 3
Disable closed captioning by scrolling through the sub-menu options and selecting the option which is best worded to turn off or disable closed captioning. Once you select this option, closed captioning will no longer be displayed on your screen.
