There are some things that you can do to make the job of coaching them easier on yourself and make it easier for your child to be successful at keeping his room organized by himself.       Declutter your child's bedroom by removing any item that they have outgrown, are broken or that they no longer want, use or need.

      Clean the bedroom thoroughly so that you are starting with a clean slate. Vacuum, dust, wash the windows, clean the window treatments, wash the bedding and do all of the laundry.

      Limit the items that will be store in your child's room, if possible. Store most toys in a basement or playroom if you have one. Reserve the bedroom for quiet or educational activities.

      Install bookshelves to store books, board games and puzzles.

      Arrange your child's books, games and puzzles neatly on the bookshelves. Train your child to put these items away on the shelves when they are finished using them.

      Place a toy bin in your child's room for the toys that will be stored in the bedroom.

      Place the toys in the toy bin. Make it a part of your child's bedtime routine to put all of their toys away in the toy bin each night before going to bed.

      Add a laundry hamper to your child's bedroom if you do not already have one. Train your child to place dirty clothes into the hamper and not on the floor.

      Clean your child's room one day each week and encourage your child to help with age-appropriate tasks so they can share in the responsibility for keeping their space clean and organized.
