How to Make a Pencil Holder out of Paper
Making crafts is a creative outlet, especially when you are making a gift from scratch. The recipient of the gift knows that you care because you took the time to make it by hand. With papier-mâché, you can use simple paper and flour to make a pencil holder, which anyone can use. A teacher or family member would love this pencil holder, which is shaped like an apple.

- Balloon
- Papier-mâché paste
- Newspaper strips
- 3 sheets typing paper in strips
- Red tissue paper
- Green construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue

Blow up the balloon completely and then let the air out. Blow it up again to 4-inch diameter and tie a knot in it. This makes your apple appear more round.

Prepare the papier-mâché mixture per the instructions on the container, or simply mix flour and water to create the paste. Dip the newspaper strips in the paste and plaster them onto the balloon. Cover the balloon with four layers of newspaper papier-mâché strips. Leave a 2-inch hole open around the balloon knot. That will be where you insert the pencils. Let the papier-mâché dry for 24 hours.

Put three layers of white typing paper strips over the newspaper with more papier-mâché mixture. Let this dry completely.

Pop the balloon with a pin at the top opening. Carefully remove the balloon fragments through the top hole.

Set the bottom of the papier-mâché pencil holder on a damp towel for 10 minutes to soften the bottom. Then gently push down on the pencil holder to crush the bottom so that it is flat.

Tear the red tissue paper in small strips and apply to the pencil holder with the papier-mâché liquid. Cover the pencil holder so that it looks like a red apple. Let dry. Cut out two small leaf shapes out of the green construction paper and glue them to the edge of the hole for the apple's two leaves. When everything is completely dry, spray with clear varnish.
