Building a playhouse from scratch is possible with an old cardboard box.

A playhouse is a toy many kids would love to have, but store brands can sometimes be overpriced. Making one at home with a few items already on hand can be a more thrifty option. An old unused box can be the jumping off point to build the playhouse. Getting kids involved can make creating a playhouse a fun project and it can be completed easily in one afternoon with a few tips and guidelines.

Instructions

    • 1

Find an old cardboard box large enough for a child to fit inside. A refrigerator box works well for this purpose.

    • 2

Cut off the box's top flaps with scissors. Flip the box so the open side acts as the floor and the other sides of the box act as the walls and roof.

    • 3

Cut out a rectangle doorway from the front wall of the playhouse. Cut out the doorway in the bottom center of the front wall. Cut out square windows on the two other walls.

    • 4

Place an old, round oatmeal can flush against the last remaining wall of the box and trace its outline with a pencil. Cut out the traced circle with scissors, then insert the can into the open hole. Secure in place with super glue to make a telescope.

    • 5

Attach an empty cracker box to the roof of the box with super glue to look like a chimney.

    • 6

Paint the box, oatmeal can and cracker box in colors of your choosing. Let the paint dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Let kids draw designs on the box with markers and crayons.

  • Take care not to get super glue on your hands or clothes.
