How Do I Get a Building Inspector License?
Building inspectors work on newly-constructed and older buildings. They may specialize in residential or commercial structures, or with electrical systems or plumbing. They may work for a private company or for government building departments, or be self-employed. Building inspectors ensure the safety of a structure and check to see if it is in accordance with state and federal safety codes. Some building inspectors may even specialize in working on certain structures, such as bridges, dams or highways, as well as houses.

1
Check with your state. States have different requirements to obtain a building inspector license. Your state may have an Office of the State Building Inspector under the Department of Public Safety, or the Division of Licensing Services may be the appropriate agency.
-
2
Fulfill the educational requirements your state demands to become licensed. Some states require a certain level of education, such as a minimum of a high school diploma. You may also need to complete additional education, such as related coursework at a technical or vocational college.

3
Fulfill any experience or apprenticeship requirements. You may need to get a job working for a licensed inspector in order to become licensed. For example, New York requires at least 40 hours of working experience, according to A Better School of Building Inspection.

4
Pass your state's licensing exam. Many states offer their own licensing exams, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The details of how to sign up for and take this exam vary by state; check with the appropriate state agency. You may be required to pay a fee. Successfully passing this exam means that you have earned a building inspector license.
-
5
Obtain an additional certification with a nationally-recognized organization, as recommended by the U.S. Department of Labor. This may not be required by your state, but it may improve your employment opportunities. An example of an organization that offers certification in various categories (such as residential or business buildings) is the International Code Council. To become certified, you must pass an exam.
