How to Become a Police Officer in Santa Maria, California
Santa Maria, California, is located about 3 hours north of Los Angeles and 4 1/2 hours south of San Francisco. Located in Santa Barbara County, Santa Maria is a town that has about 92,000 residents as of the 2009 count. The Santa Maria Police Department works to protect any and all people in Santa Maria by not only stopping crime, but working to prevent it in the first place. The police department is looking for individuals that want to work towards a safer and better Santa Maria.

Fulfill basic requirements. You must be at least 21 years of age. You must have a high school diploma or a G.E.D. with an overall score of at least 45.

Obtain a valid California driver's license. You must have a satisfactory driving record and be able to operate city vehicles.

Fill out an employment application and return it to the Human Resources Division of the City of Santa Maria, which can be found at 110 E. Cook Street in Room 1.

Pass the required polygraph test, psychological exam, physical agility test, background check and medical exam.

Graduate from a P.O.S.T. Certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy, such as the Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria. This law enforcement academy covers 780 hours of training in all facets of police work. Upon completion, you will be hired as a police officer in Santa Maria.
