      Check if your desired business name is available. This is done automatically when you register your business online. If you opt to mail or otherwise manually submit your business registration papers, you can search for the name online to see if it is taken, or call the Division of Revenue at 609-292-9292.

      File a formation/authorization certificate with the State of New Jersey. This is not applicable to general partnerships or sole proprietorships, which must register on the local level. Filing a formation/authorization certificate can be done online or by filling out and submitting the necessary forms manually. The fee for registration is $125.       File Form NJ-REG to register your business for employer and tax purposes with the Division of Revenue of the Department of the Treasury. This can be done online. Apply for your federal identification number with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) (can be done online on the IRS website) if you plan to have employees.
