How to Repair a Small Dent

How to Repair a Small Dent thumbnail
Keep your ride looking hot by removing small dents.

Unsightly dents and dings on your car detract from the appearance and value of the vehicle. Repairing even the smallest dents can be expensive. If your car has a small dent it can easily be removed with a few home supplies and a can of compressed air. A can of compressed air, which is often used to clean computer keyboards, should be available at your local office supply store.

Instructions

    • 1

Cleanse the surface of the dent. Pour some car cleaner into a bucket of water. Take your sponge, dip it into the solution and scrub the dent. Dry the surface with a clean towel. Place the vehicle close to an electrical outlet. Use an industrial extension cord if need be.

    • 2

Connect the hair dryer to the electric outlet and adjust it to its hottest settings. Place a can of compressed air near you, for easy reach. Put on your rubber gloves.

    • 3

Direct the hair dryer to the center of the small dent, moving the hair dryer's nozzle in small circles. Place the hair dryer as close as possible without touching the car. Heat the dent for 1 to 2 minutes.

    • 4

Turn off the hair dryer after the alloted time and place it in a safe location. Turn the compressed can of air upside down so that the bottom is facing up. Spray the can of air into the dent for 10 seconds.

    • 5

Wait for the icy particles on the dent to melt off. Wipe away the moisture with your rag and inspect the area.

Tips & Warnings

  • Holding a can of compressed air with the bottom facing up causes extremely cold, liquid carbon dioxide to come out when sprayed. The heat from the hair dryer causes the metal to swell on a micro level. The extreme temperature difference causes the metal to quickly contract, resulting in the dent popping out.
