How to Open an MDF File Extension

The MDF file is a disc-image file, similar to ISO or DMG. A disc image is often a digital copy of a physical disc, containing the exact same data, which can be burned back to a physical disc, if ever needed. Creating disc images is a good way to back up your CDs and DVDs. In order to open the MDF file, you will need an application capable of handling disc images.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install an application that can handle disc images. A few known applications that can handle the MDF file extension are Alcohol 120, MagicISO, and ISO Buster.

    • 2

      Launch the application.

    • 3

Select "File > Open" and locate the MDF file. Click "Open." The application will open the disc-image file. You can then follow the instructions to burn the image to a CD or DVD. Once burned to a physical disc, you can then access the contained data--for example, if the MDF file contained a movie DVD, once you have burned it back to DVD you can play the movie on your computer or DVD player.
