Open Yahoo! messenger. Look underneath your chat text box. This is the box where you type your messages. You will see a pencil graphic. Click on that graphic. This graphic will bring up a preferences window in a separate window from the one you are on.

Go to your options menu and click on "Ignore all invitations to join room" and then choose the option "Ignore private messages from strangers." Make sure you choose both options.

Find the option "Pop-up new private messages". You want to be sure and uncheck this box so that no pop-ups will be allowed to get through.

For added security, add names to your "ignore list" just by choosing the option "view ignore list" and adding the usernames that you want to ignore.
