Snow Chains Installing on '99 Jeep

Snow Chains Installing on '99 Jeep thumbnail
Snow chains come in all shapes and sizes.

Jeep owners who live in climates with above-average snowfall often are required to install snow chains on the vehicle's tires. Snow chains are designed to increase tire traction in snow or icy driving conditions. Due to the off-road popularity of Jeep vehicles, snow chains also provide traction in mud.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the snow chains in front of each of the four tires on the Jeep. Make sure the tightening mechanism for each chain faces away from the vehicle.

    • 2

Drive the vehicle onto the four chains. Stop when the tires are centered in the middle, from front to back and side to side.

    • 3

Lift both sides of each chain around the tire until they touch. Link the hooks together on the back side of the tire, then hook the link ends together on the front side of the tire. Drive the car forward 10 feet. Readjust the links to take in slack. Use the tightening tool to secure the fastening mechanism on the tires.

    • 4

Drive the vehicle a few miles, then re-tighten the chains to remove any slack. Hook a Bungee cord to any excess linkage and hook it back to a stationary link on the tire chain. This keeps loose links from damaging the vehicle.
