Homemade Cleaning Solution for Your Camera Lens

Homemade Cleaning Solution for Your Camera Lens thumbnail
Camera lenses require special care when cleaning.

Good quality camera lenses are made with optical glass that requires special treatment. You can buy alcohol-based lens cleaner from any store that carries camera equipment, but the small amount of cleaner you purchase can be very pricey. An alternative to this is to buy a few common ingredients and use those for cleaning your lenses for far less money.

Things You'll Need

  • Distilled water
  • 100 percent methyl alcohol
  • Microfiber cloth or lens tissues

Instructions

    • 1

Breathe on the lens until fog appears. Wipe the lens with a microfiber cloth or lens tissue until the foggy areas are clean.

    • 2

Sprinkle a small amount of distilled water on a microfiber cloth or lens tissue for a soiled lens. Wipe away dust from the camera lens using this.

    • 3

Dampen a microfiber lens with 100 percent methyl alcohol to remove fingerprints and other smudges from the lens.

Tips & Warnings

  • When wiping a camera lens, start at the center and work toward the outside in a circular motion.

  • Allow the lens to dry thoroughly before using.

  • Attach a filter to your camera to cover the lens when shooting. This will protect the lens from floating debris in the air.

  • Always keep the lens protected with a lens cover when not in use.

  • Avoid touching the lens. This takes practice, but fingerprints are the hardest of smudges to remove because they contain body oils that cling to the lens.

  • Never use paper towels, toilet paper or facial tissue to clean a camera lens. All are rough and could scratch the lens.
