How to Upgrade an Access Database

Microsoft Office Access (formerly known as Microsoft Access) is a relational database tool. Successive versions of Microsoft Office Access have added new functionality -- such as tabbed browsing, pivot tables, and pivot charts. However, to take advantage of these new features, the database must be in the latest format. Microsoft Office Access provides a conversion tool to upgrade these databases. The database is reformatted to meet the standards of the newer version of Microsoft Office Access. For example, converting an Access 2003 database using Microsoft Office Access 2007 will reformat the database to meet the standards of Access 2007.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the database in Microsoft Office Access.

    • 2

Click the "Office" button -- the round button that resembles a Windows Start button -- in the database window, and select "Convert."

    • 3

Click "Save" to convert the database.

Tips & Warnings

  • Microsoft Office Access will prompt you to save the file using a different file name, if the file name already exists. For example, if you are trying to convert "Database.mdb," Microsoft Office Access will attempt to save the converted file as "Database.accdb." If another file named "Database.accdb" already exists, you must save the converted file using a different filename -- such as "Database1.accdb."
