How do I Add Freon to a 2000 Dodge Caravan?
A 2000 Dodge Caravan has an air conditioning (A/C) system that uses R134a as the refrigerant (freon). You can recharge your A/C unit yourself and save money by not going to a mechanic. This vehicle does not take R12 so ensure you buy R134a refrigerant (two kinds of refrigerants are sold in automotive stores). Once you have the right refrigerant, adding freon to your A/C system is a quick job.
Instructions

1
Buy a can of R134a refrigerant at your local auto parts store.
-
2
Start the vehicle's engine and turn the air conditioner to max A/C. Listen to see if the air conditioner motor engages. Keep going on with the steps whether it engages or not, but be mindful of whether it engaged at step 5.

3
Attach the hose to the can of R134a if it did not come attached. Open your Caravan's hood and look for the air conditioner line, which will be near the front of the vehicle. This line has a low pressure and high pressure service fitting. Find the low pressure service fitting, which is located on the passenger side of the car, near the compressor towards the headlight and close to the radiator.
-
4
Unscrew the cap from the low pressure service fitting and screw the charging hose onto the fitting. Press the release button on top of the can of R134a to allow the refrigerant to pass into the vehicle's A/C system.
-
5
Listen for the A/C pump to engage if it has not already done so. If it does not engage, stop filling the car with refrigerant and see your mechanic. If it engages, or has already been engaged, fill the system with the R134a. Watch the gauge and ensure the A/C system is not overfilled.

Tips & Warnings
The pump may engage and disengage periodically. When the pump is off, the gauge on the R134a will drop. Ensure the pressure is not too high when the pump is activated.
The high and low pressure fittings are different sizes; you will not be able to fit the charging hose onto the high pressure service fitting.
Do not fill the system with R134a if the pump is not working. The pressure will be too high if the pump begins to work and it will damage your A/C system.
