How to Cut Glass Shapes

How to Cut Glass Shapes thumbnail
Glass must be scored in order to be cut into shapes.

Glass cut into shapes is used in mirrors, lamps, candle holders, furniture and more. Square and rectangle panels are used in windows as are circles. Picture frames are made with different designs that require shapes ranging from simple rectangles to ovals and octagons. Stain glass is known for using all kinds of shapes and broken glass pieces. If you need to cut a piece of glass, for whatever reason, it is not difficult to do as long as you have a cutter tool at your disposal.

Instructions

    • 1

Use rulers, stencils and whatever else, to draw the shapes you want on the glass. Mark the glass with a thin line that is easily wipes off when you are done. Make sure that the lines you draw end on the edges of the glass. All cuts in the glass, no matter what shapes are made, must go end to end on the pane. As an example, start to draw a line in the glass on one end, make the shape you want, and then continue to draw the line to the other end. This will help you later when you need to break the glass.

    • 2

Place the glass on a soft cloth to cushion it.

    • 3

Cut the glass along the lines that you drew. Score the glass with a glass cutter. Press into the glass with the cutter so that you hear a zip sound. Score all lines out to the edge of the glass.

    • 4

Wipe the glass clean with a damp paper towel so that you can throw away the glass dust and bits that remain from the scoring.

    • 5

Place a part of the glass off the edge of the table. Hold the edge of the glass with one hand and press down to break it loose. Be careful when pressing down on the glass so that you don't cut yourself. It is best to wear gloves to be on the safe side.
