How to Troubleshoot a MacBook Desktop

While MacBooks are known for having relatively few issues compared to other laptop computers, you may still experience the occasional problem, including having your desktop "freeze up." When this happens, you may or may not see your mouse arrow on the screen and you are typically unable to open any applications. The Apple users' guide recommends a few easy troubleshooting tips to help you quickly restore your MacBook's desktop to functioning as usual.

Instructions

    • 1

Force quit any applications currently running by pressing "Command+Option+Escape." Select open applications from the list using your arrow keys, then press "Return."

    • 2

Press the "Option" key while right clicking on "Finder" in the dock. Arrow down to "Relaunch," then press "Return." Continue to Step 3 if your desktop is still frozen.

    • 3

Hold down the power button until your MacBook is completely powered off. Disconnect any USB cords or anything plugged in to your computer, then press the power button to restart (see Warnings).

Tips & Warnings

  • Any further actions will depend on the specific problem you are experiencing with your MacBook desktop. Open "System Preference" (located on the "Apple" menu) and select "Network," then "Assist Me." Open "Diagnostics," followed by "Network Diagnostics," and follow the instructions to receive assistance with your exact issue.

  • Be aware that any work you have not saved may be lost when powering off your MacBook by holding down the power button.
