How to Fix Permanent Hair Color When It's Too Dark


Hair dye allows you to change your appearance, but it can sometimes turn out too dark. If you are unhappy with the color of your hair, you can lighten the hair color at home. Once you lighten the hair color, you need to ensure that you care for your hair properly to prevent any additional damage.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 oz. 20-volume peroxide
  • 1oz. shampoo
  • 1oz. water
  • Bowl
  • Conditioner
  • ½ cup virgin olive oil
  • Microwave safe bowl
  • Wide comb
  • Hair dryer

Step 1

Rinse your hair with hot water.

Step 2

Combine 2 oz. 20-volume peroxide, 1 oz. of shampoo and 1 oz. of warm water in a bowl. Do not use shampoo intended for color treated hair.

Step 3

Apply mixture to your hair and allow it to sit for 5 minutes or longer until you notice a change in color.

Step 4

Rinse thoroughly with warm water and apply conditioner to your hair. This will add moisture back to your hair and prevent it from drying out. .

Step 5

Lighten and protect your hair again, if necessary. Use the hot olive oil treatment.

Step 6

Pour ½ a cup of virgin olive oil into a microwave safe bowl. Heat the oil for 15 seconds in the microwave. Apply the oil to your hair with a wide comb to distribute it evenly. Allow it to sit on your hair for 15 minutes.

Step 7

Heat with a hair dryer set to medium or high.

Step 8

Expose your hair to natural ultraviolet rays. Sit in the sunlight for an hour a day to remove the pigmentation and make your hair lighter.
