How to Edit Color Video

If you have color video on your computer that you want to make changes to, you can do so by opening the video in a video editing program. Video editing programs provide the tools to cut and move video footage, or remove sections of the video footage altogether. Numerous video editing programs have the ability to edit color video, including the two video editing programs native to Windows and Mac operating systems, Windows Movie Maker and iMovie.

  1. Windows Movie Maker

      Launch Windows Movie Maker on your Windows system. Windows Movie Maker comes preinstalled on most Windows computers and can be accessed through "Start>All Programs>Windows Movie Maker."

      Open the color video that you want to edit in movie maker by clicking "File," "Open" and finding the video file.

      Drag the video you imported from the "Media" pane in Movie Maker down to the timeline. If you added more than one video clip, drag the clips to the timeline in the order in which you want them to play.

      Click on the right edge of any video clip on the timeline and drag it left or right to change the length of the clip. Move the clip by clicking on the middle of the clip and dragging it left or right on the timeline. As you drag the clip down the timeline, an indicator appears between other clips on the timeline to show you where the clip will be inserted if your drop it. Drop the clip in the desired location.

      Cut and remove sections of the color video by clicking the "Split" tool beneath the preview screen and then clicking on a video clip. A cut is made in the clip wherever you click. Make another cut in the clip, click on the section of the clip that appears between the cuts and click "Delete" to remove the section of the clip.

    iMovie

      Open iMovie on your Mac system by going to the docking bar at the bottom of the screen and clicking the iMovie icon. iMovie comes preinstalled on some Mac systems.

      Press the "Import" button and find the color video that you want to edit. Double-click the video file to add it to iMovie. Drag the color video clips into the iMovie timeline.

      Click on any clip in the video timeline to make a yellow border appear around the clip. Change the length of the clip by clicking the right or left edge of the border and moving it left or right. Delete the section of the clip inside the yellow border by pressing the "Delete" button.

      Move the video clips in the iMovie timeline to change the order in which the clips appear. To move a clip, click it to highlight it and then drag the clip between any of the other two clips on the timeline.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not have the color video you want to edit saved to your computer already, connect the device on which the video is stored, such as a digital video camcorder, to your computer using the cables provided with the device. Open the capture feature in Windows Movie Maker by going to "File>Capture from Digital Camera" or in iMovie by toggling the switch in the bottom left corner of the screen to the camera icon.
