How to Troubleshoot a Pioneer Avic S-1
Pioneer, known for its in-dash audio and navigation products, released the AVIC-S1, a portable Global Positioning System navigation receiver. It is pocket-sized, so you can take it with you as you leave the vehicle. The device includes telephony functions, and features a 3.5-inch display. Issues that you can encounter with the Pioneer AVIC-S1 can include problems with power, screen, connections and navigation. These kinds of issues can be fixed by following some troubleshooting steps.

Connect the AC adapter to the GPS if the power won't turn on when you're on battery power. The battery level may be too low. The GPS will run when the AC charger is connected. Other indicators that battery power may be depleted include the screen responding slowly.

Reset the GPS if the screen freezes. Use the stylus to press the reset button on the device. It's on the side and is marked "Reset." If this soft reset doesn't fix the issue, try a hard reset: Disconnect all the cables, including power; slide the power switch to the "Off" position; wait a minute and then turn the device back on.

Adjust the backlight if you can't see the screen. From the "Destination" menu, touch "Settings," then "Hardware" and then "Brightness."

Turn on, and perform any resets before connecting cables if there are cable connection problems.

Look for a clear view of the sky if the Pioneer AVIC-S1 can't pick-up any GPS signals. Bad weather, trees, buildings, tunnels and automobile window tints can affect performance. Take the device out of the car and try again.
