Rice makes a great filler for a neck pillow that can be used warm or cold.

A rice-filled neck massager can be used hot or cold and shapes nicely around your neck to provide comfort. Quick and easy to make, a rice-filled massager also can be used for back pain, knee pain, or anywhere needed. Adding essential oils, herbs or even tea to the rice creates a more soothing experience.

  • Cotton or wool tube sock
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Dry Rice

Instructions

      Fill the sock with rice, leaving 2 inches of room at the opening. Sock should be firm, but still flexible.

      Sew the opening of the sock closed with needle and thread. You also can tie the sock tightly shut with string or ribbon if desired.

      Heat the filled sock in the microwave on low for about 90 seconds. Be careful not to overheat.

      Chill the sock in the refrigerator or freezer if you would prefer to use it cold.

      Drape the sock across the back of your neck or other body part.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adding fragrance: Remember that oils are much more potent than herbs or tea, so use only a couple of drops. Choose scents that are soothing, such as lavender, chamomile, or vanilla.

  • An alternative to a sock: Fold a hand towel in half lengthwise and sew together. Or use any natural fabric, such as cotton or wool, that can be heated.
