DS Mod Tutorial

The Nintendo DS features a touch-sensitive screen that can be used to control your favorite games. Through a technique known as "soft-modding," the DS can have its own operating system that allows users to play user-generated games, backup copies of other games, and even play Super Nintendo and original NES games.

  • R4 Revolution for DS, Acekard for DS or M3DS Real
  • MicroSd to USB reader
  • MicroSD card

Instructions

  1. The R4 Revolution

    • 1

      Download the R4 operating system and unzip the archive by double-clicking it and dragging the folders to your desktop.

      Plug your MicroSD card into the MicroSD to USB adapter.

      Connect the adapter to your computer by plugging it into an open USB port.

      Copy the R4 operating system to the SD card. You can do this by clicking "Start," selecting "My Computer" and dragging the unzipped files to the card.

      Remove the MicroSD card and insert it into the R4 Revolution flashcart.

    • 6

      Insert the R4 into your Nintendo DS system and turn it on. It will automatically launch to the R4 Revolution's operating system.

    The M3DS Real

      Download the M3DS Real's software. Double-click the archive, and drag the files and folder to your desktop.

      Insert the MicroSD card into your USB adapter and plug the adapter into an open USB port on you computer.

      Open "My Computer" by clicking "Start"and selecting "My Computer." Drag the M3DS Real software from your desktop to the MicroSD card.

      Remove the MicroSD card from your USB reader and insert it into the M3DS Real flashcart.

      Insert the M3DS Real into the Nintendo DS. When powered on, it will launch to the M3DS operating system.

    The Acekard

    • 12

      Download Acekard's operating system. Open the archive file with a double-click and drag the software to your desktop.

      Insert your MicroSD card into the USB adapter. Plug the adapter into a USB port on your computer.

      Click "Start"and select "My Computer." Then drag the Acekard software from your desktop to the MicroSD card.

      Remove the MicroSD card from the USB adapter.

      Insert the MicroSD card into the Acekard flashcart and then insert the flashcart into the Nintendo DS.

      Turn on the Nintendo DS to launch the Acekard software.

Tips & Warnings

  • Soft-modding is safe in that it does not require owners to open or modify the DS's hardware.

  • Once you have a flashcart for the Nintendo DS, you can download emulators and game roms from various locations on the Internet. Be sure that the files you are downloading are not in violation of international copyright laws.

  • All three of these flashcarts come pre-packaged with cheat codes that can be run on a wide variety of Nintendo DS games.
