How to Start a Gas Rheem Heater

Each gas furnace series has one or more models in it to provide the consumer many choices in capacity, heat output, unit size, and cost befitting a wide range of installations and budgets.       Turn the manual gas stop on the furnace unit to the "Off" position, and leave it there for at least five minutes before starting the furnace.

      Move the thermostat control to the lowest temperature setting.

      Lift off the furnace unit access panel in the front or side of your heater.

      Move the gas controller dial to the "On" position, or flip the gas control switch to the "On" position, depending on your model.

      Press the furnace panel back on until it is secured in place.

      Turn "On" the manual gas stop at the rear or side of the unit, and turn on the electrical power to the unit.

      Move the thermostatic control panel until the unit is on the "Heat" setting, and then punch in the steady room temperature you prefer the furnace to maintain.

Tips & Warnings

  • The furnace may produce a foul odor or smoke slightly when it is started for the first time. Open all of the doors and windows in the home to maximize ventilation and dissipation of any temporary smoke or odor.

  • Never attempt to light the burner with a match or lighter, because this can cause an explosion. Rheem gas heaters use a self-ignition start.
