How Do I Mow My Zoysia Lawn?

How Do I Mow My Zoysia Lawn? thumbnail
Zoysia grass is popular for its resistance to drought, bugs and wear.

Zoysia, a warm-season grass that originated from Southeast Asia, Japan and China, has three species: matrella, japonica and tenuifolia. From these many varieties have been developed, such as compadre, zenith, emerald and meyer. All zoysias are slow but steady growers as well as wear-, drought- and pest-resistant. Zoysia produces a thick carpet of thin blades perfect for warm climates. Mowing zoysia grass is not much different from mowing any other species of grass; it does not require any special equipment. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust your mower blades to a height of 1 inch for mowing zoysia that is nearly out of dormancy. This is only done for the first mowing of the season and should be done after any danger of frost has passed.

    • 2

Sharpen your mower blades before cutting zoysia grass. Sharp blades not only leave your lawn looking tidier and more even but also make a cleaner cut on the individual shafts of grass. This prevents the grass tips from turning brown.

    • 3

Raise your mower blades to a height of 3 inches for mowing throughout the warm months. Allow the grass clippings to fall back into the lawn to provide nutrients for the growing zoysia.

    • 4

Mow your zoysia grass at regular intervals if you live in cooler northern regions, normally once a week. Zoysia in full sun will require more frequent mowing, as will grass in wet regions.

    • 5

Mow your zoysia grass as often as twice a week if you live in southern regions. When conditions are dry, as in periods of drought, refrain from mowing the zoysia.

    • 6

Fertilize zoysia grass three times a year. Mow the grass before laying down the fertilizer. Use a high-nitrogen fertilizer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask your local nursery or county extension service if zoysia grass is suitable for your climate.

  • Don't attempt to grow zoysia grass in cold regions.
