Whether you are looking to replace a worn-out door knob or want to add a new knob with security features such as a privacy lock, you can do so using basic hardware supplies.   • Screws
  • Replacement strike plate
  • Replacement pawl

Instructions

    • 1

      Remove the screws holding the faceplate of the old door knob in place, using the screwdriver. Twist the screwdriver in a counterclockwise motion to loosen the screws.

      Remove the screws holding the knob plate of the old door knob into place, using the screwdriver. Twist the screwdriver in a counterclockwise motion to loosen the screws. The old door knob should completely detach from the door at this point. Set both sides of the old door knob to the side.

      Push the faceplate and pawl through the opening on the side of door. Remove them completely and set them to the side.

      Remove the strike plate from the wall using the screwdriver. Twist the screwdriver in a counterclockwise motion to loosen the screws. Set the old strike plate to the side.

      Push the new faceplate and pawl into the door. The pawl should face away from the direction the door will close. The pawl and faceplate should fit securely in the door. If you cannot push the faceplate and pawl with your hands, use a rubber mallet to gently hit the two parts into place.

      Screw the end of the pawl into place using the screwdriver. Twist the screwdriver in a clockwise motion to tighten the screws.

      Insert the handles of the door knob into the door. The screw holes should line up with the holes in the threaded cylinder of the faceplate. Screw the handles into place using the screwdriver. Securely tighten the screws.

      Install the strike plate onto the wall using the screwdriver. Securely tighten the screws.
