A transformer is used to transfer electricity from one piece of equipment to another. It runs on oil, which must be changed over time. After removing old oil, properly dispose of it to comply with environmental laws regarding the disposal of fuel waste and hazardous liquids. Because transformer oil can be recycled and reused, recycling services are available statewide to persons needing to dispose of used oil. Does this Spark an idea?

    • 1

      Contact a state environmental agency where you live (see Resources). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers the service of recycling used transformer oil, according to its official website, free of charge. The EPA recycles transformer oil with any PCB level.

      Remove the old oil from your transformer according to the manufacturer's instructions.

      Contact a used oil transporter---a person who transports used oil over public highways---or store the used oil in a container made specifically for fuel transport. Label the storage container as "Used Oil."

      Drop off your transformer oil at an on-site recycling location in your state. Indicate the volume of the oil you are dropping off. Oil recycling is a free service, so drop-off fees are not required.
